Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egygt, China and India and was introduced into the West as 'Zone Therapy' by Dr William Fitzgerald, an Ear Nose and Throat specialist in 1913. He divided the body into 10 longitudinal zones and found that reflex areas on the hands and feet were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

Eunice Ingham developed Zone Therapy during the 1930s into what is now known today as reflexology. She found that congestion or tension in a part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Reflexology is based upon similar principles as acupuncture and acupressure whereby each part of your body is connected by energy flowing in zones within the body. By stimulating reflex points on your feet, hands and/or face helps your body to help itself.

What Conditions may Reflexology Help?

Reflexology is a "complementary" therapy or "holistic" therapy, and manages the whole person ie mind, body and soul, not just symptoms of illness or disease. It can be used to complement medical treatments or just to reduce stress and aid relaxation.

Usually the feet are worked to help manage the whole person, however the hands may also be used in certain circumstances to enhance the treatment.

Reflexology may help in the management of:

  • Joint and Muscular pain
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Mental health issues
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Hormonal issues - including fertility issues and menopausal issues
  • Skin problems
  • Sleep disorders
  • Sports Injuries
  • Stress-related conditions or anxiety

I also offer maternity reflexology for pregnant clients throughout their pregnancy to relax them and help to reduce pregnancy related ailments such as morning sickness, aches and pains etc, and to help prepare the body for birthing in the later stages.

Reflexology can also be beneficial for fertility issues or couples trying to conceive by helping to relieve stress which in turn may help to balance hormones.

TCM acupressure points and/or VRT (Vertical Reflex Therapy) may be incorporated into a reflexology session in circumstances where it will enhance the treatment, at no extra cost.

What Benefits can be Expected?

Reflexology can help to bring the whole body into balance (homeostasis).

Most of my clients have more energy and feel full of life after a session. Others find they sleep better, their digestive issues disappear or their muscular pain or joint pain has been eased.

Severe headaches have reduced in frequency and intensity over a few treatments.

Children and young adults with developmental difficulties and hyperactivity have also found reflexology and Functional Reflex Therapy treatments calming and beneficial.

Every one of us is an individual and the body responds in different ways in different people. Some find symptoms or conditions improve after just one session, others find that they require several sessions before they begin to feel the benefits. A chronic condition will have occurred over time, so it is only natural that your body will take time to help itself.

What is Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT)?

VRT is well recognised in helping orthopaedic problems (especially back and neck pain) and sports injuries, although it can also be used for other ailments and conditions.

It is a form of reflexology where the dorsal (top) side of the feet and hands are treated whilst they are weight-bearing. VRT is very powerful and only a short session is needed (15 - 20 minutes). Working the dorsal side of the hands and feet enables clients who have limited mobility or are wheelchair bound to have a treatment session.

VRT is also very effective when used in the Corporate workplace to help relieve stress and physical ailments in a short treatment session. (15 - 20 minutes)

Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage is based on the ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda, which has been practiced in India for thousands of years.

Ayurveda means the science of life and longevity" and its approach to health and long-life is the balance of mind, body and spirit. This health is maintained by the harmonisation and balance of 3 subtle life giving forces or doshas and each dosha has a role to play in the body.

When imbalance and disharmony occurs, it may lead to various ailments and health conditions.

There are seven Chakras or energy centres located around the body. Chakras are a way of describing the flow of subtle energy and are often said to relate to an endocrine gland, which the Chakra is thought to influence.

During times of stress, the Chakras lose their ability to synchronise with each other and become unbalanced, leading to energy blocks.

An accumulation of negative energy in the Chakras may lead to an emotional or physical condition in the form of pain or disease.

The head, neck and shoulders are important energy centres in the body and tension accumulates when you are stressed or angry. This tension may manifest itself as a stiff neck or shoulders, eye strain or in some cases, hair loss.

Every Indian Head Massage session allows time to balance the three higher Chakras, as these may promote balance and harmony throughout the whole body.
